Welcome back! Today’s topic is about ways we can individually take action beyond educating ourselves and the younger generation. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, many of us are not able to leave our homes to protest. But, there are plenty of ways to contribute to and support the Black Lives Matter movement, protestors, and families who have lost loved ones to police brutality. If you cannot afford to risk your health or your immunocompromised family members, below is a list of bailout funds, petition, and donation options. If you are unable to make a financial contribution at this time, also NOT TO WORRY, there are plenty of alternative ways to contribute.
Bailout Funds
With protests persisting across the nation, many people have and continue to be arrested. These bailout funds are in place to help release these individuals from jail. If you do not live in California or would like to contribute to the national bailout fund, visit the website List of Bail Funds for Protestors Across the Country for more information on your state. For California residents, here are some of the bailout fund options organized according to location.
California Bailout Funds
Sacramento
Bay Area
Orange County
Los Angeles
San Diego
San Luis Obispo
Petitions
Aside from providing financial assistance to protestors, support real change by signing the following petitions down below. Signing petitions is a great option for those who are not able to make financial contributions at this time.
Support the Victims’ Families
Text “ENOUGH” to 55156 - demand justice for Breonna Taylor
Text “JUSTICE” to 55156 - demand DA George Barnhill and Jackie Johnson are removed from office
Donations
Another alternative way to contribute aside from participating in the protests would be to donate! Below are some of the gofundme’s for the families of the most recent police brutality victims and various organizations to support as well.
Donate to the Individual Families
gofundme.com - Official George Floyd Memorial Fund (this is the only legitimate gofundme to donate directly to George Floyd’s family)
Donate to Organizations/Projects
There are so many ways to get involved and show your support for the change that needs to happen. Anything you can do whether it is donating to a fundraiser or bailout fund, signing a petition, or even attending a protest is important. The movement that has spread since the murder of individuals like George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, has sparked conversations that are leading to change. Confederate monuments are being removed, police officers are being fired or held accountable for murder, and the conversation about reallocating police funds into mental health and education has been opened. However, these victories are not enough. There is so much more to do and justice to be had so keep the momentum going.
