Contacting Your Representatives and Senators

It may seem intimidating to try and contact your representative or senator, but it is an important role you can play in which bills and resolutions they do or do not support. Critical mass is a size, number, or amount large enough to produce a particular result.

Your representative or senator can’t know how much support there is for something unless the people they represent tell them. Contacting your representatives shows your commitment to a cause. If they do not agree with you then they must be persuaded that voting against your views will hurt them in the next election. If they do agree with your views, then they need to know that there is enough support behind an idea or a bill such that it will not cost them political capital.

It is much like our recent post on boycotting. Many people don't feel their individual effort will prevail. However, if everyone does their part as a collective, change can happen. Contacting your representatives is no different. Your individual call, letter, e-mail, can be one out of thousands and it will force the representative to hear what their constituents need and how they feel.

If you don’t know who your senator or house representative is you can type in your zip code here to find your representative:

You can type your state into the search bar here to find your senators:

→ Clicking their names will redirect you to their websites, which will likely give you the option to EMAIL them!
